Play Sugarhouse topped the five Pennsylvania Casinos in the total value of sports bets taken in January.
The State’s Gaming Control Board reported that Pennsylvania’s five Casinos took a total handle of $32m in their 2nd month.
They also disclosed that Sugarhouse garnered more than $10.8m of that amount with Rivers Casino in second place with $9.5m.
The sportsbook in Pennsylvania is not Sugarhouse’s first. It initially got into the sports betting business in New Jersey in June last year. It was one of the first to be launched after the Supreme Court ended the ban on sports betting.
New Jersey were first
New Jersey, led by its then governor Chris Christie played a leading role in the court battle and was the first state to legalize sports betting. Seven months later it has 12 sportsbooks which, in January, brought in a best-ever $385m in betting handle.
That’s 10 times more than Pennsylvania, the next best of the eight newly legitimate US betting states. However, while it’s catching up fast, New Jersey is still some way behind Nevada where sportsbooks have always been legit.
For the Super Bowl alone, Nevada took in just under $150m in bets as opposed to New Jersey’s $35m.
Handle taken for the Super Bowl by other fledgling betting states were: $4.7M for Mississippi, $2.8m for West Virginia and $2.2m for Delaware.
