Julian Edelman was the upset winner the Super Bowl MVP after Patriots beat the LA Rams 13-3 on Sunday.
The New England wide receiver earned the award for an inspiring 141-yard running performance in the Patriots 6th Super Bowl triumph.
He caught 10 passes and some of his runs were crucial in keeping the Patriots winning momentum.
The Patriots beat the LA Rams 13-3 in the lowest score in Super Bowl history. Many observers, therefore, felt that defense triumphed over offense.
Gilmore and McCourt preferred by some
They would have preferred to see Patriots defensive players like cornerback Stephon Gilmore or Jason McCourty get the award.
Gilmore forced a fumble, took an interception, caused three pass breakups, and made five tackles.
And McCourty made an incredible play to prevent a Rams touchdown that might have turned the game around.
Edelman was not among the top six favorites in the pre-match MVP odds being quoted by most New Jersey sportsbooks a week ago.
It was headed by Patriot quarterback legend Tom Brady at +115 with Jared Goff, the LA quarterback at +185.
They were followed by running backs Sony Michel (NE) and Todd Gurley (LA) at +2000 and James White (NE) at +2500.
The leading defensive player among the top six was Aaron Donald, the Ram’s highly-rated tackle, at +2500.
