As we head into the final weekend of October for NCAA Football, let’s take a look at the top five teams to bet on this weekend.

East Carolina +3

Let’s start with a Friday night game as East Carolina heads to BYU as a 3-point underdog. This was supposed to be the season BYU contended for a playoff spot. But instead, the Cougars have been riddled with injuries and are 4-4.

Since beating then No. 9 Baylor on September 10, the Cougars have allowed at least 41 points in three games, all losses. In the last two weeks, they gave up 52 to Arkansas and 41 to Liberty while scoring a combined 49 points in those losses.

East Carolina, meanwhile, put 47 on Memphis and 34 on UCF in wins last two weeks. Quarterback Holton Ahlers has completed 70% of his passes this season for 2,435 yards with 18 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He will test BYU’s secondary repeatedly and will help the Pirates keep this game close.

Oklahoma State +1.5

The Cowboys are the better team, and this game is pretty much a pick. Oklahoma State won at Baylor and took TCU to overtime on the road before rallying to beat Texas last week. Kansas State lost at TCU last week and struggled to win by one at Iowa State the week before.

Spencer Sanders threw for 391 yards in the win over Texas last week and is playing great football in October for the Cowboys. Meanwhile, Adrian Martinez left the TCU game with an injury after just two pass attempts, and backup Will Howard was injured in the third quarter. Howard returned later and could start Saturday, but the Wildcats’ QB situation is in flux.

Given that combination and what the Cowboys can do on offense, look for Mike Gundy’s squad to win and cover in Manhattan on Saturday.

Tennessee -12.5

This Tennessee Vols team is just built different. They are having fun, and they are super talented. Last week they were throwing trick plays at an FCS team while winning by more than 30.

The crowd will be insane at Neyland Stadium, yet again, for a night kickoff. Heisman candidate Hendon Hooker has completed 75% of his passes at home this season with 14 touchdowns and one interception. Wideout Jalin Hyatt has nine touchdowns in the last three games, with 444 yards in that span on 17 catches.

What started as a promising season for Kentucky went off the rails a bit when Will Levis was injured in a loss at Ole Miss. The Wildcats lost at home to South Carolina, and Levis returned to help upset Mississippi State last week. But UK hasn’t topped 30 points against a SEC team this season and now is facing a UT that averages over 50 ppg.

Nebraska +7.5

The Cornhuskers are getting more than a touchdown at home against No. 17 Illinois. Nebraska loves to play one-score games; they lost at Purdue by six before the bye week and beat Rutgers by one to start October. They also have 3-point losses to Georgia Southern and Northwestern this season.

Illinois has a great defense, but they don’t blow teams out with their deliberate, clock-control offense. In the last two games, they beat Iowa 9-6 and Minnesota 26-14 with two late field goals. The Illini will run the ball as often as they can, with Chase Brown getting at least 20 carries for 108 yards in every game this season.

Illinois is the much better team and should win this game, but Nebraska can keep it close at home and cover the +7.5.

Ole Miss +2.5

This is a pick against Texas A&M as much as it is a pick for the Rebels. Everything is collapsing on Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies with three straight losses and rumors of transfers and suspensions. A team ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll with playoff aspirations is now 1-3 in SEC play and 3-4 overall.

The offense is a mess with just 24 points or less in the three losses, and the only time they have topped 24 this season was the 31-0 season-opening win over Sam Houston State. The Aggies gave up 30 to South Carolina and 42 to Mississippi State.

Lane Kiffin’s squad was shut out at LSU in the second half last Saturday, but they can score. The Rebels put 52 on Vandy, 48 on Auburn, and topped 35 in three of four non-conference games. Look for the Rebels to get back on track in College Station this weekend as they stay in a first-place tie with LSU and Alabama in the West.
