New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles Betting Preview

The New York Yankees became the first team in MLB to get to 30 wins as they walked off the Baltimore Orioles in 11 innings on Tuesday.

The win evened the series as the Yankees (30-13) pushed their lead to 4.5 games in the AL East while the Orioles (18-26) fell back into last place. Wednesday’s series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium, airing locally in both markets.

The Yankees are 9-4 against Baltimore this season, 4-1 at home. New York took the 2021 season series 11-8 with a 5-4 mark at Yankee Stadium. Since the start of the 2019 season, the Yankees are 41-17 against Baltimore, and they have won every season series since 2016.

Orioles Offense Coming Around

Baltimore is 4-8 in their last 12 games, and they are 6-15 on the road this season. They are 8-10 in games started by left-handed pitchers and 8-13 against AL East teams.

Baltimore lost five games in a row, scoring a combined eight runs in those setbacks. Baltimore’s offense has picked up their production lately, scoring at least six runs in five of the last six games, but they have also allowed six or more in five of those contests.

The Orioles hit two homers on Tuesday as Austin Hays and Rougned Odor both went deep in the seventh inning. Ramon Urias also homered in Monday’s win while Hays drove in two, as did Robinson Chirinos. Urias is 4-for-7 with a homer, double, and three runs scored in the series, while Hays has four RBI.

Mancini leads the Orioles with a .293 average while Hays is batting .284. Anthony Santander leads Baltimore in both home runs (7) and RBI (21). Hays has 20 RBI and a team-best 11 doubles, while Ryan Mountcastle and Odor both have 18 RBI.

Baltimore sends RHP Tyler Wells (1-3, 4.41) to the mound on Wednesday. He took a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Friday, allowing three runs on two hits over 4⅔ innings. Wells has gone at least five innings in three starts this season and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his starts.

Wells has faced the Yankees twice this season, once in each stadium, allowing two runs on six hits over nine innings. Aaron Judge is 3-for-8 against Wells, while Giancarlo Stanton is 2-for-7 with a home run. Anthony Rizzo is 0-for-5, while Isiah Kiner-Falefa and DJ LeMahieu are a combined 0-for-7.

Yankees Pitching Slumping

The Yankees lost three in a row before the Tuesday win, their worst stretch of the season. Their pitching has faltered lately, allowing 32 runs in the last six games after only allowing more than five once in the first 15 games in May. The Yankees are 16-7 at home this season, 22-9 against RHP, and 16-8 against the AL East.

The Yankees got two homers on Tuesday from Gleyber Torres, while Rizzo and Jose Trevino also went deep. Their other seven hits in the game were singles, including the walk-off from Trevino. Judge homered twice in Monday’s loss, and he has six homers against the Orioles so far this season.

Judge leads MLB with 17 homers, 11 of which have come this month. He’s batting .314 with 34 RBI, while Stanton has 35 RBI, and Rizzo has driven in 26. Rizzo’s homer on Tuesday was his 11th of the season, and Torres has seven homers.

Lefty JP Sears (1-0, 0.00) is back from Triple-A Scranton to make the start on Wednesday. Sears has two MLB innings under his belt this season while posting a 0.83 ERA in the minors. He is a control specialist with 12.46 strikeouts per nine innings and a near 50% ground ball rate.

Last season, Sears was 10-2 in the minors with a 3.46 ERA in 18 starts. Over 104 innings of work, he struck out 136 batters and walked just 29 while holding opponents to a .228 average. He got a relief win against the Orioles on April 16 with a shutout inning as he allowed hits to Santander and Mancini.

Betting Analysis

  • Baltimore Orioles +1.5 (-115) Moneyline +170
  • New York Yankees -1.5 (-105) Moneyline -200
  • Total Runs: 8 Over -120, Under +100

Baltimore has the advantage in Wednesday’s game on the mound with the Yankees having played four games in the last three days, plus losing a starter to injury.

Their bullpen is pretty taxed as well. Both offenses are swinging the bat well, and the teams have combined for nine home runs in the series; look for the runs to continue.
