Young New Heisman Favorite

The first full week of NCAA football action saw a switch already among Heisman favorites. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was spectacular in his first college start and is now the favorite, overtaking Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Rattler began the season as the favorite at +550 but is now at +700. Young had the third-best odds before the start of the season at +900 but is now the leader at +500. Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei saw his odds drop from +800 to +1100 over the weekend.

Young became the first quarterback in Alabama history to throw for four touchdowns in his starting debut. The No. 1 Tide thrashed No. 14 Miami 44-13 in Atlanta as Young finished with 344 passing yards.

Rattler led Oklahoma to a win, but they had to hold on to defeat Tulane 40-35 at home. He threw for 304 yards and one touchdown while tossing two interceptions.

Uiagalelei was the only top-five Heisman candidate to lose over the weekend as No.3 Clemson fell 10-3 to No. 5 Georgia in Charlotte. Uiagalelei was 19-for-37 for 178 yards with an interception in the loss. The interception was returned for the only touchdown of the game, and Georgia sacked Uiagalelei seven times.

Speaking of Georgia, quarterback JT Daniels is fourth at +1200. He also had an interception in the game against Clemson and didn’t account for a touchdown. Daniels completed 22-of-30 passes for 135 yards in the win.

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud rounds out the top five at +1400. In his first start, Stroud was 13-for-22 for yards in the No. 4 Buckeyes 45-31 win at Minnesota on Thursday. He had four touchdowns and one interception.

Eight Ranked Teams Fall

The weekend saw eight ranked teams lose, though five of those came against other ranked opponents. No. 10 North Carolina lost at Virginia Tech, No. 16 LSU lost at UCLA, and No. 20 Washington was stunned by FCS side Montana for the three teams to lose to unranked opponents.

In the top-25 matchups, No. 3 Clemson lost to No. 5 Georgia, and No. 14 Miami lost to No. 1 Alabama, both in neutral site games. No. 12 Wisconsin lost at home to No. 16 Penn State while No. 17 Indiana lost at No. 18 Iowa in Big Ten action. The other ranked team to lose was No. 23 Louisiana falling at No. 21 Texas 38-18.

Top 25 Matchups This Weekend

There are two big games this weekend where both teams are ranked, and a Big Ten team is hosting both games. Ohio State will host Oregon in a top-10 matchup at the Horseshoe in Columbus on Saturday at Noon ET on FOX. The Buckeyes are -14 against the Ducks, who beat Fresno State 31-24 in Week 1.

The other ranked matchup is an Iowa showdown in Ames. The Iowa State Cyclones were ranked No. 7 in the opener, and they host No. 18 Iowa, and both teams could move up in the new rankings. The Cyclones struggled at home against FCS Northern Iowa on Saturday but won 16-10 while Iowa beat No. 17 Indiana 34-6.

Iowa State enters the game -4, and they lost at home to Iowa 18-17 in 2019. The in-state rivals didn’t meet last season as the Big Ten played a conference-only schedule. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
