The amount wagered on Super Bowl L111 between the Patriots and the Rams next Sunday is expected to double up on last year’s close on $160 million to as much as $330 million.
That was the view yesterday of the Vegas Stats and Information Network (VSiN) who seem to have no doubt that an all-time sports betting record for a single event is on the way
VSiN came to this conclusion after senior staff had analyzed Nevada’s growth in Super Bowl betting for the past 15 years and found that after starting with $85m in 2004 it went from $132.5m in 2016, to 138.5m in 2017 and to $158.5m last year.
They believe The Bowl will set another wagering record this year. This especially when Nevada’s handle is added to the additional handle they are expecting to come from New Jersey and the six other US states new to sports betting.
They see the total handle for the big game soaring to something like $330m.
Sports’ betting in these seven states was illegal when last year’s Super Bowl was played.
The Supreme Court would only rule that the PASPA law prohibiting sports betting in most states in America outside of Nevada was unconstitutional in May, some four months after the 2018 Super Bowl in January.
New Jersey With Eight Sportsbooks Is Flying
Since then, eight internationally-backed sportsbooks later, betting in New Jersey, the first State to introduce legal sports betting after the Supreme Court ruling has taken off and has been flying with full expectations of even more growth when other sportsbooks still in the planning stages open their doors.
A handle of more than a billion dollars was taken in the Garden State during its first six months of sports betting with a record $330m coming in November and another $318m in December.
These figures tower over those of more recently established sportsbook states like Philadelphia, Rhode Ireland, Mississippi and Delaware, but their individual handle amounts together with New Jerseys could easily contribute as much in wagers to this season’s Super Bowl final as $150 million.
“The handle, or amount wagered on the Big Game, has grown pretty steadily over the past decade and has broken records in Nevada for each of the past three years,” said VSiN CEO Brian Musburger when explaining VSiN’s reasons for predicting the new handle records for the Super Bowl.
“Between that momentum and the addition of seven new states taking regulated bets, we’re expecting the amount wagered this year to dwarf everything we’ve seen in the past.”
“In honor of one of our favorite weekends of the year, we’re offering free access to our video content.”
During this free period, the network’s stable of sports experts will deliver 24 hours of specialized coverage leading up to the game. This, including a special pre-game show hosted by its legendary broadcaster and VSiN Managing Editor Brent Musburger.
