NJ PUNTER LOSES $506,000 BUT BOOKIES GET THUMPED

New Jersey sportsbooks took a pasting on Sunday in the LA Rams-Cleveland Browns NFL game.

And yes, this despite one punter losing a stunning $506,000 to the William Hill sportsbook at the Ocean Casino.

The losing bet is believed to be the biggest yet of the 2019-2020 NFL season.

It was also thought to be the single biggest bet anyone at William Hill can remember being placed with their Atlanta sportsbook.

And it ran counter to the overwhelming number of bets placed on the Rams in the season’s heaviest-wagered game so far

William Hill has confirmed the loss as first reported by VSin’s Paul Howard. The brave but luckless punter wagered his half-million dollars on the Browns to cover as 3.5-point underdogs.

Heavily backed Rams beat Browns

Sadly for him – and the State’s bookmakers – the Browns lost to the heavily-backed Rams in a prime-time game. This after it had been the subject of much pre-match speculation and some heavy money wagers.

Covering as 4.5-point road-favorites, the Rams won 20-13 after surviving a last-minute drive by Baker Mayfield and the Browns.

The result came as a massive blow for New Jersey’s 20-0dd online, casino and race-track sportsbooks. And William Hill was right up there among them

So much money had been placed on the Rams, NJ’s sportsbooks desperately needed the Browns to cover. The fact that William Hill took a drubbing despite their huge half-million win was a good indication of how much was at stake.

“Even with the big fluke bet we took, this result was still horrible for us,” William Hill’s Nick Bogdanovich admitted.

“This game was a massive handle and we took all Rams from -2.5 to -4. Almost everything we took live was on the Rams.”

Losing Punter “a regular customer

The decision to take the massive bet was ‘relatively easy’ according to Bogdanovich, the director of trading at William Hill. “The guy is a regular customer with us,” he said.

No other weekend bet on NFL football got close to matching the half-million William Hill monster. According to Darren Rovell of Action Network, there were, however, a fair number of five-figure wins. At least three came in the Week 3 games with the largest spreads; Jets at Patriots and Dolphins at Cowboys.

The bets were as follows:

  • A $20,000 bet on Cowboys (-21.5) that earned $18,182.
  • A $20,000 teaser on Cowboys (-13.5) and Pats (-13.5) that netted $12,000 and
  • An $11,000 bet on Jets (+23) that won $10,000.

Also, a punter is reported to have won $299,910 on a $390,000 Packers-49ers money-line parlay placed at PointsBet.
