NFL NEWS & NOTES

Quarterback injuries in and out are the big news heading into Week 6 of the NFL season. Signal callers Russell Wilson and Daniel Jones were hurt last week while Tua Tagovailoa appears set to return.

In non-quarterback news, Chandler Jones and Dallas Goedert will have to work their way back off the COVID-19 lists to be able to play this week.

Wilson has Surgery

Wilson injured his hand in last Thursday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He had surgery with doctors putting screws in his middle finger, and the MVP candidate is expected to miss four to six weeks.

With Wilson out, the Seahawks will start veteran Geno Smith on Sunday night at Pittsburgh. Smith went 10-for-17 on Thursday night after Wilson was injured, and he threw for 131 yards with a touchdown and a game-sealing interception.

Smith is 12-19 in his NFL career as a starter but last got under center to begin a game in the 2017 season with the NY Giants.

Smith will face a Steelers defense that is allowing 22 points per game and 272 passing yards per contest. Both teams head into the game at 2-3, and the Steelers are -4.5.

New York Giants Hurting

The New York Giants saw running back Saquon Barkley, quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Kenny Golladay all leave the game with injuries against the Cowboys on Sunday. Add in wideout Kadarius Toney who was ejected and later reported as injured, and the Giants resemble a MASH unit on offense.

Joe Judge’s squad may be without Barkley and Golladay at a minimum on Sunday when they host the 4-1 Rams. Barkley sprained his ankle, but x-rays were negative, and he should be back sooner rather than later. Golladay hyperextended his knee, and while the MRI showed no further damage, he is likely out 1-2 weeks.

News on Jones will come later in the week as he is in concussion protocol. He was injured while trying to score from the one against the Cowboys and staggered off the field after the third down play. Journeyman Mike Glennon finished the game and would be the starting quarterback if Jones isn’t cleared.

Toney had a post-game X-Ray on his ankle after he was ejected. He played through the injury in Dallas before being ejected for throwing a punch. The injury is not a long-term concern but could keep the first-round pick out of the Week 6 game.

The Giants are +10.5 against the Rams on Sunday. New York will host Carolina in Week 8 before a Monday night game in Kansas City.

Tua Could Be Back For Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins head to London this week to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. They could welcome back quarterback Tua Tagovailoa who is eligible to come off IR for the Week 6 game. Tagovailoa broke his ribs in a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and they are 0-3 in his absence.

Jacoby Brissett has started the last three games, completing 65 percent of his passes for 858 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Tagovailoa threw for 202 yards in the Week 1 win at New England with one touchdown and one interception. He was injured after throwing just four passes against the Bills in Week 2.

The Dolphins are -3.5 against the Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The game will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET and while Tagovailoa will travel, he is not guaranteed to start or even play.
