The good news for Jimmy Garoppolo is that he passed his physical on Tuesday, meaning his injured shoulder is in the process of healing.

While Garoppolo isn’t expected to be fully healthy until next month, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback may be closer to learning his fate. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said recently that Trey Lance will be the team’s starter moving forward.

Moving Garoppolo will be difficult because of his contract. However, Garoppolo has shown to be a more than capable starting quarterback when available.

During his career, Garoppolo is 31-14 as a starter and has thrown for 11,852 yards, and 71 touchdown passes during his career. In the playoffs, Garoppolo took San Francisco to the Super Bowl during the 2019 season and has a 4-2 record in the playoffs.

Retirement haven

Julio Jones signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jones, a seven-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro wide receiver became the latest veteran to head to Florida to team with Tom Brady and attempt to pursue a Super Bowl title. Last season, Jones appeared in 10 games with the Tennessee Titans, catching 31 passes for 434 yards and a touchdown.

During his career, Jones led the league in receiving twice during a tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. His career high was when he caught 136 passes for 1,871 yards during 2015. Jones has 13,330 receiving yards for his career.

Young will miss time

Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young was played on the physically unable to perform list as he works back from an ACL injury.

After being named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020, Young was only able to play in nine games during the 2021 season. Young recorded 1.5 sacks and forced two fumbles last season.

As a rookie, Allen had 7.5 sacks, defended four passes, and forced four fumbles. Commanders coach Ron Rivera said there is no timeline for his return.

Ojabo is holding out

Baltimore’s second-round draft pick David Ojabo is holding out for the start of training camp due to some issues coming to terms on a contract. While the Ravens would like to have Ojabo in camp, from a training perspective, it’s not the biggest deal he isn’t there.

Ojabo suffered an Achilles injury in the offseason and wasn’t expected to play at the beginning of the season.

Happy trails

Veteran Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson announced his retirement due to a neck injury. Carson, 27, was only able to play in four games last season due to being injured. He rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns when he was able to play.

Carson’s tenure in Seattle will be best remembered for how he played during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In both years, Carson rushed for over 1,000 yards. His best season may have come in 2019 when he piled up 1,230 yards and seven touchdowns.

Carson retires after averaging 4.6 yards per carry and compiling 3,502 yards during his time in Seattle.
