The second week of NFL action is in the books, and there are six teams who are 2-0. On the flip side, five teams are 0-2 while two more are 0-1-1. Injuries have littered the news over the first two weeks, with a couple of big-name players going down already.
Trey Lance Out for Season
As feared on Sunday, San Francisco quarterback Trey Lance will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. The second-year pro underwent surgery on Monday, and the 49ers expect him to be fully recovered for the 202e season.
Lane took the starting job from Jimmy Garoppolo in the offseason. He struggled mightily in the Week 1 loss at Chicago, completing just 13-of-28 passes for 164 yards. He ran 13 times for 54 yards but also had a fumble and was sacked two times. Sunday, he was hurt in the first quarter after passing for 30 yards and rushing for 13.
Garoppolo stepped in on Sunday and led the 49ers to a 27-7 win over Seattle. He completed 13-of-21 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Last year Garoppolo threw for 3,810 yards and 20 touchdowns while leading San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game.
The off-season was filled with trade rumors surrounding Garoppolo and the 49ers. But ultimately, they held onto him as a backup, and that plan worked out as now they have an experienced quarterback and should be able to run the same offense.
The 49ers head to Denver for a Sunday Night game in Week 3. Despite being on the road, they are -1.5 and -120 on the money line. The entire NFC West is 1-1 after two weeks though the Niners are 1-0 in the division after the victory over Seattle.
Mike Evans Suspended
For the second time in five years, Mike Evans has been suspended after an altercation with Marshon Lattimore. The Tampa Bay wideout will miss the Buccaneers game in Week 3 after being ejected during the game against the Saints on Sunday.
The play happened in the fourth quarter; Lattimore and Leonard Fournette got into a shoving match. Evans sprinted in and shoved Lattimore to the ground in what the league deemed “aggressive conduct and a violent action.” Evans was ejected from the game and then suspended on Monday.
The suspension leaves the Bucs short-handed as both Chris Godwin and Julio Jones missed the Saints game with injuries. Tom Brady threw for just 190 yards as he finally beat the Saints in the regular season with Tampa. Evans had 61 receiving yards in Week 2 and has 11 catches for 132 yards and a touchdown on the season.
They signed veteran receiver Cole Beasley off the street on Monday and assigned him to the practice squad. He could debut against the Packers if Godwin and Jones aren’t cleared.
The Bucs host the Packers in Week 3 and are -2.5 favorites. Tampa Bay is the only 2-0 team in the NFC South, with the Saints at 1-1 and the other two teams at 0-2.
