Mercurial wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. may have a home again with the Los Angeles Rams for the 2022 season if he wants to be there.
Beckham, who tore his ACL in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI win over the Cincinnati Bengals, won’t be ready to play by the start of the regular season. As such, he remains unsigned and has spent some of his recent time crashing Rams coach Sean McVay’s wedding.
Beckham scored five touchdowns had had 305 receiving yards for the Rams last season. Before getting hurt in the Super Bowl, Beckham had two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown for Los Angeles. Here’s a look at some other things going on around the NFL.
Catch him if you can
Eagle rookie wide receiver Devon Allen hasn’t played football since 2016, when he played with the Oregon Ducks. Instead, Allen spent the last six years focusing on becoming an Olympic hurdler, placing fourth in last year’s Olympics and fifth in 2016 in the 110-meter hurdles. Last Sunday, Allen ran the even in 12.84 seconds, which was the third-fastest time in history.
Allen was able to catch the attention of NFL scouts by running a 4.35-second 40-yard dash at Oregon’s pro day. Whether the track speed will translate to the gridiron remains to be seen.
McLaurin will skip minicamp
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is planning to skip mandatory minicamp as both teams push for a new contract. During his three seasons in Washington, McLaurin has finished with 900 yards or more receiving in every season. McLaurin’s low was the 919 he compiled as a rookie.
During the 2021 season, McLaurin hauled in 77 passes for 1,053 yards and five touchdowns.
Show Payton the money
The Miami Dolphins were reportedly willing to make Sean Payton the highest-paid coach ever had he decided to venture to South Beach.
Reports out of Miami are that the Dolphins were willing to offer the 58-year-old coach $100 million over five years. Former Las Vegas Raiders coach John Gruden was the only other coach ever to sign a $100 million contract.
Payton, who went 152-89 as New Orleans Saints coach from 2006 to 2021, opted to instead stay retired. Payton led the Saints to their only Super Bowl title in their history and had a winning record in his final five seasons. The Dolphins instead hired Mike McDaniel.
Help wanted
Defensive end Carlos Dunlap took a visit with the Carolina Panthers. Dunlap, who has been in the league since 2010, was still effective with the Seattle Seahawks last season. In 17 games, Dunlap compiled 8.5 sacks for Seattle. He also defended seven passes and forced a fumble.
The Saints brought in running back David Johnson for a meeting. New Orleans is looking for depth in the backfield behind Alvin Kamara.
Johnson rushed for 228 yards in 13 games with Houston last season. Johnson’s best season came in 2016 with Arizona, when he compiled 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns to earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors for the only time in his career.
