NEW YORK SPORTS BETTING GETS GO-AHEAD, BUT ONLY IN CASINOS

New Jersey is set to hold on to its multitudes of New York sports betting visitors for some time yet.

That became clear Monday when New York’s Gaming Commission voted to allow limited sports betting in the state.

Bets must be of the in-person kind and can only be made at four upstate Casinos.

Online betting, the big attraction for New Yorkers, especially those just a bridge over the Hudson away, didn’t get a mention.

Mobile betting continues to be a no-no in the most populated city in the USA (8 million plus). And this at a time when 80% of New Jersey’s first $2 billion in bets this year came from mobile wagering.

If mobile wagering in New York is getting nowhere right now, it’s because it’s currently mired in a constitutional controversy.

Four up-state Casinos set to get sports betting licenses

In the meantime the four Casinos given the sports-betting green light are:

  • Resorts World Catskills in Monticello
  • Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady
  • Tioga Downs in the Southern Tier and…
  • Del Lago Resort and Casino in Seneca County.

No mention was made of the amendment submitted by Senator Joseph Addabbo on Thursday.  It called for in-person betting to be allowed at sports stadiums located in counties with no Casinos. They would need to be affiliates of the four licensed Casinos

Yankee Stadium in Bronx County would most likely be one of them. Madison Square Garden in NY County and the Batavia Downs and Finger Lakes horse race courses could be others.

Sports wagering, even at the Casinos, won’t begin until the Casinos receive their wagering licenses later this summer.

They are expecting, however, to be up and running before the start of the NFL season in September.
