The Pac-12’s world may be on fire, but commissioner George Kliavkoff wanted to make it clear to the media at their annual media days that the conference is on stable ground.
Several schools within the Pac 12 have been mentioned as possible expansion targets for the Big 12. What happens with brands like Oregon and Washington are still unclear.
Kliavkoff also shot back at Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark, who said the conference is open for business when it comes to expansion. When it came to his opinion on the Big 12, Kliavkoff said he isn’t sure if the Pac-12 wants to go shopping there or not. It is a bizarre time in college football.
All of the schools and conferences are attempting to save themselves. How that resolves itself will chart a course for the future of the sport.
Hill commits to A&M
Texas A&M’s top-of-the-line recruiting has continued under Jimbo Fisher. Recently, Anthony Hill, a linebacker who is ranked No. 35 in the nation, has committed to the Aggies as part of the 2023 recruiting class. Hill is the top-rated linebacker in the country. Hill chose Texas A&M over rival Texas.
Yeah, but where did you get the Gators?
Wide receiver recruit Adian Mitzell, a four-star prospect from Florida, committed to play for the Gators by bringing two live alligators to the announcement. Mizell ranks 93rd in the class of 2023.
Corral may have done things over
Former Ole Miss standout quarterback Matt Corral talked about his time with the Rebels during his first training camp with the Carolina Panthers. Per the media cycle these days, Corral’s comments started with his thoughts and then a clarification and apology.
Corral had said in an interview that he felt going to Ole Miss was taking the easy way out, and he didn’t face any competition at quarterback.
Rebels coach Lane Kiffin said that Corral followed up with him personally to say that isn’t what he meant. Corral played at Ole Miss from 2018 to 2021, and the Panthers took him in the third round of the 2022 draft.
UNC, Duke, see changes to schedules
While the USC and UCLA moves have sucked up much of the attention with realignment this offseason, the ripples are being felt throughout the college football world. Liberty was previously an independent school before the Big 12 raided the AAC for Central Florida, Houston, and Cincinnati.
That caused AAC to grab teams from Conference USA. Conference USA then grabbed four new members for the 202023 season. Liberty, Jacksonville State, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston all joined the conference. Liberty joining caused issues for a few schools.
The Flames had signed a contract to play ACC schools Duke and North Carolina three times. But Liberty will no longer have space on the schedule and will have to cancel the games. Liberty will now have to play an eight-game conference schedule.
The Tar Heels’ next scheduled game against Liberty was supposed to take place in 2024.
Duke’s next schedule game against Liberty was set for 2025.
