The Major League Baseball season is underway, despite a delayed start due to labor negotiations, but one polarizing star has not pitched since last summer.
Former Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer did not have the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office pursue a case against him after a woman sued Bauer alleging he choked her unconscious on multiple occasions, sodomized her without consent, and punched her all over her body, according to an ESPN report. He’s still under MLB investigation.
News broke late Monday night that Bauer was suing the woman, claiming defamation and tortious interference. He seeks monetary and punitive damages, ESPN reported. Bauer last pitched on June 28, 2021, before being suspended, and he remains on administrative leave while MLB continues its independent investigation into the domestic violence claims.
Shutout
Meanwhile, Dodgers ace Walker Buehler became the first pitcher in 2022 to finish off a complete game. He allowed three hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 10 in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win in Arizona on Monday.
Buehler has received Cy Young Award votes in two of the last three seasons and figures to be one of the contenders again this year. He finished ninth in voting in 2019 and fourth last season, both were All-Star seasons for the right-handed ace.
New Threads
The Kansas City Royals are the latest team to share new City Connect uniforms. The navy threads feature their “KC” logo that runs like a fountain, a tribute to the city’s many fountains and those displayed at Kauffman Stadium. There is also a crown above the “R” on the sleeve of the jerseys. The Royals will wear them for the first time on Saturday.
Injury Report
In injury news, Atlanta Braves outfielder Eddie Rosario needs a laser procedure to correct his vision, the team announced. Rosario is experiencing blurred vision and swelling in his right eye. He went 0 for 2 on Sunday as a pinch hitter and is hitting .066 this season.
New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom has yet to make his season debut after experiencing a stress reaction in his throwing (right) shoulder blade. The perennial Cy Young candidate who is widely regarded the best pitcher in baseball is showing “considerable healing” after an MRI and CT scan on Monday, the Mets announced. DeGrom will have follow-up tests in three weeks, the team said. The two-time Cy Young winner was shut down after July 7 a season ago due to an elbow sprain.
Chicago White Sox star outfield Eloy Jimenez was carted off the field on Saturday. He’s listed with a right hamstring strain and is expected to miss six to eight weeks according to media reports. In 11 games this season the left fielder is hitting .222 with one double, one home run, and seven RBIs.
Card sells
In lighter news, a damaged Honus Wagner card sold for $1.53 million Tuesday morning after a 17-day auction, Robert Edward Auctions said. Wagner cards in particular have created record sales. This T206 is damaged with three sides missing, trimming, and is creased, yet it fetched 75 bids. The same auction company sold a Wagner card for $6.606 million, the all-time record for a sports card at the time.
