No quarterback in latter-day NFL history is more famous than Tom Brady. He has, after all, won a record six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in nine starts.
And this year, now 42, he has to-date led the reigning Super Bowl champions to five straight wins. Equally important are his impressive stats.
He’s thrown 10 touchdown passes with a completion rate of 63.1% and a total passing distance of 1,409 yards. But he’s also blemished his record a little with two intercepted passes.
And right now, that might just be the reason he’s not the favorite to win the NFL’s 2019 regular-season MVP award. His age might just be another.
Ahead of this week’s game against NY Giants, Brady was only 4th or 5th favourite with most New Jersey’s bookmakers.
Resorts Casino’s online sportsbook had him 5th behind Patrick Mahomes (+125), Russell Wilson (+700) Christian McCaffrey (+1000) and Deshaun Watson (+1000).
888sport also had his odds at +1200 but in their book, he was in 4th place ahead of Watson (+1400).
A Good reason why Mahomes is No 1
There’s good reason Mahomes is right up there again as he seeks to retain the award he won last year.
The Kansas City quarterback leads the league in passing yards. He is tied second in passing touchdowns. He hasn’t had a pass intercepted, and he has a completion rate of 65.5% in the Chiefs 4-1 winning record.
Unfortunately, at +125, you are going to have to spend a lot to make a lot on him very early in a long season.
Brady, at 12/1 could be the better bet right now though, perhaps, the man to watch is Wilson.
At 7/1 the Seattle Seahawks quarterback owns the NFL’s standout stats right now. He hasn’t had a pass intercepted in his team’s’ 4-1 win record. He’s the league leader with 12 touchdowns and has a sky-high 73.1 completion percentage.
McCaffrey could be another good bet
Mind you, another good bet right now could be Christian McCaffrey. For a third successive year, the Carolina Panthers running back is the league front-runner in rushing yards. They also tie him for second in rushing touchdowns. And yes, he’s managed it all in the absence of Panthers’ injured star quarterback Cam Newton.
Among 888sport’s many NFL prop bets there is one for the ‘most passing yards in the regular season’ and here Brady is not even among the top 10. On a list once more headed by Mahomes at +125, he trails in a distance 12th place
Kyler Murray, last season’s College football MVP and this season’s No 1 NFL draft, also heads Brady – and Wilson too. At odds of +1800 Murray is in 8th place with Brady at +2500 and Wilson 15th at +2500.
