Novak Djokovic had no trouble moving through to the third round of the Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena. The 32-year-old Serbian outclassing wildcard Tatsuma Ito 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 as his title defence gathered momentum.
The New Jersey sports betting favourite, Djokovic had gone into the match hoping history would not repeat itself. Three years ago he lost to a wildcard Denis Istomin in the second round at Melbourne Park. .
This time he never ever looked threatened. The 16-time grand slam champion swept aside Ito in straight sets.
In warm but breezy conditions, Djokovic, the second seed, barely raised a sweat as he asserted his authority from the outset against the Japanese underdog.
Eyeing what would be a record-extending eighth Australian Open crown, he hit seven winners in a lopsided 22-minute first set.
Djokovic dropped a set for the first time in his career in winning his first round tie with Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday. Since then he hasn’t looked back.
Having only won 50 per cent of his first serves in the opening set, Ito improved by winning 20 of 28. However he was broken in the ninth game and it proved decisive for Djokovic.
The third set was similar to the first as Djokovic dismantled Ito with a relentless display to earn another Japanese date – this time against Yoshihito Nishioka.
Djokovic is listed as the 5-4 favorite to win his 8th Australian Open.
He is followed by Rafael Nadal (24/5), Daniil Medvedev (9-1), Roger Federer (10-1), Tsitsipas (14-1), Dominic Thiem (30-1) and Nick Kyrgios (30-1).
