Cardinals Grab Murray As The Number One Draft

After weeks of mock drafts, day one of the NFL’s 2019 draft has finally come and gone with its biggest question answered.

The New Jersey bookies were spot-on. Quarterback Kyler Murray, their -590 (1-6) favorite to be drafted first was indeed drafted first.

Furthermore, as predicted, it was the Arizona Cardinals who chose him which of course means that their current starter quarterback Josh Rosen could soon be on the move.

Murray, last season’s Heisman Trophy winner, set himself up as the draft favorite with a superb college season at Oklahoma. He passed for 4,361 yards, rushed for 1,001 and made 54 touchdown passes for the Sooners.

Still, some observers weren’t taken in. During this week’s run-up to the draft, they were suggesting that Murray’s height (5ft 10in) would count against him. It didn’t.

There were at least two eyebrow-raising early selections on day one. Oakland Raiders grabbed edge-rusher Clelin Ferrell at No. 4 and Daniel Jones was snapped up at No. 6 by the New York Giants.

Judged by where most observers expected the two to be picked, you could certainly describe them as reaches.

Mind you not everyone would agree with this view. Draft analyst Chris Trapasso certainly didn’t.

He said among other things: “I like Clelin Ferrell. I really do. Had him in the middle of the first round of my Big Board. Ahead of Josh Allen from Kentucky. Ahead of Brian Burns from Florida State. Why? Because Ferrell can beat you in many ways. That’s huge once you get to the NFL level.
