David Beckham says Inter Miami has a “great opportunity” right now of signing up superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barcelona’s Messi and Juventus’ Ronaldo have both been linked with moves to the United States. And yes, the expansion-franchise Inter-Miami of which Beckham is President and part-owner looms as a possible destination.

There’s been speculation that Miami, who make their MLS debut against Los Angeles FC Sunday, is where they are heading. And Minnesota United head coach Adrian Heath helped fuel this speculation when he talked up the possibility.

On Wednesday Beckham addressed the speculation during his appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’.

“Well you know what, we’ve got great opportunities down in Miami,” the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and England standout said with a smile.

“We’ve been contacted by a lot of different players with the possibility of coming to join the team. As any owner, you really want the best players and if we have the opportunity to bring in players like Cristiano or Leo great. I have such admiration for them as athletes.

“We have a great roster” – Beckham

“At the moment, we have a great roster. Young players and a couple of experienced players too. But a lot of young players who are just ready to play.

“One of the things I learnt from Alex Ferguson [former Man United manager] …. he turned around to me and said, ‘whoever you bring in, they have to be the right fit for the club.’ It’s not about the biggest name or personality, it’s about who fits in best with the players.

“That’s what we’ll do. But, like I said as an owner; if you want to bring these players in then we have a great opportunity.”

Inter, who have also been linked to Manchester City’s David Silva, Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani and Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, have a Designated Player spot still available after signing Rodolfo Pizarro and Matias Pellegrini.

Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, to give Inter Miami its full name or The Herons if you are using its nick-name, has five owners. Along with Beckham, they are Marcelo Claure, Jorge and Jose Mas and Maaayoshi Son.

Miami will play first game in Black and pink strip

Inter Miami is set to play its first Major League Soccer (MLS) match away against Los Angeles FC on Monday. The players will be wearing their away black and pink strip for this game, but will change to their all white home strip when they play their first home game against DC United next Saturday.

For the time being all their home games will be played at the upgraded 18,000-seater Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. There are plans for them to move their MLS team in 2022 to Freedom Park, a 25-seater stadium still to be built on the present site of the city-owned Melreese Country Club.

Their head-coach is Diego Alonso, 44, is a former Uruguayan international striker. He comes to The Herons from Mexico where he was coaching Monterrey when they blew out Atlanta and Sporting KC in the Concacaf Championship.

Alonso sealed the job on the strength of his performance against Atlanta. It was keenly observed by Paul McDonough. Atlanta’s former vice president of soccer operations, now Inter Miami’s sporting director,

McDonough’s work building clubs from scratch in Orlando and Atlanta helped him secure a similar role in Miami, and the Atlanta team which won the 2018 MLS Cup was very much of his making.

“He (Alonso) has competed against MLS teams in the Concacaf Champions League, and I paid close attention when his team was beating Atlanta United,” McDonough told the Miami Herald. “All the MLS teams aspire to win that, and we just signed a guy who has won it twice with two different clubs.”
