Lance started slow on Sunday when he took over for Garoppolo the second time the Niners got the ball. He started 1-for-6 with an interception and no first downs in the first three series. But in the final three drives, he led the 49ers to two touchdowns on 7-for-8 passing and 93 yards.
Garoppolo started the game for San Francisco and was 3-for-5 for 15 yards. He led a 15-play drive that ended with an interception inside the red zone off a drop by 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk.
The game was also the first Chargers home game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to host fans. They drew over 68,000 fans for the Sunday night tilt despite most of the Chargers starters sitting out the game.
The 49ers will open the regular season on Sunday, September 12th, on the road against the Detroit Lions. San Francisco is -7.5, and the game has a total of 45.5 points. The Niners are the NFC West favorites at +180 while they are +650 to win the NFC and +1400 to win it all.
The Chargers open the season on the 12th on the road against the Washington Football Team. They are -1, and the game has a total of 44 points. The Chargers are +450 to win the AFC West, +1600 to win the AFC, and +3000 to win the Super Bowl.
Wentz is Returning for Colts
Just three weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot, Carson Wentz returned to Colts practice on Monday. It was originally reported the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback would miss 5-to-12 weeks, putting the regular-season opener in doubt. Now it is definitely possible that Wentz makes his Colts debut in Week 1 at home against the Seattle Seahawks (-1.5).
Guard Quenton Nelson had the same surgery a day after Wentz and also returned to practice on Monday. Neither Jacob Eason nor Sam Ehlinger, who have taken a regular-season snap at quarterback, were the Colts quarterbacks for the first two preseason games.
Indianapolis not only needs Wentz back, but they need the injury-free Wentz of 2017 and 2019. The Colts begin the season with the Seahawks, Rams, Titans, Dolphins, and Ravens, all teams that won at least ten games in 2020.
Wentz is +1000 to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He has the fifth-best odds and is the only player in the top 10 not to be coming back from a season-ending injury in 2020. Instead, the 28-year-old is looking to bounce back from a 15-interception/16 touchdown season that led to him getting benched in Philly and eventually traded in the off-season.
The Colts are +3500 to win the Super Bowl this year and +1600 to win the AFC. After acquiring Wentz, they were division favorites but are now +140 in the AFC South with the Titans at -105.
