The first game features All-Stars on the mound as the Brewers send RHP Corbin Burnes (4-4, 2.41) to the mound against Mets ace Jacob deGrom (7-2, 0.95). The Brewers will have lefty Brett Anderson (2-5, 4.69) on the mound in the nightcap against an unnamed Mets hurler. Anderson and deGrom were the scheduled starters on Tuesday, while Burnes was always slated to start Wednesday.
Brewers Pitching is Their Strength
Milwaukee took over first place on June 19 and padded their lead with a nine-game win streak that ended Sunday against Pittsburgh. They are 25-17 on the road this season, including a 7-3 mark in their last 10 games. The Brewers are 7-6 against the NL East, including a sweep of Washington in their only other doubleheader this season.
The Brewers offense had just five hits on Monday by Omar Navarez went deep, his eighth of the season. Avisail Garcia leads the team with 15 homers and 51 RBI, but no Milwaukee player is batting over .300. The pitching staff leads the NL in strikeouts, anchored by closer Josh Hader who has 20 saves, a 0.55 ERA, and 55 strikeouts in 32 ⅔ innings.
After three straight no-decisions, Burnes got back in the win column on Thursday at Pittsburgh. He struck out five, walked one, and allowed just one run over 7 ⅓ innings. He has given up just three home runs all season and has struck out at least five in every start with eight starts of nine or more.
Burnes has faced the Mets just once in his career, and he’s only faced seven current players on the New York roster. Five of those players are hitless, while Pete Alonso and Jose Peraza are both 1-for-1.
Mets Riding deGrom to All-Star Break
The Mets have been great at home with a 25-11 record this season, but they are just 6-6 against the NL Central. This will be the Mets’ ninth doubleheader of the season, and they are 10-6 so far in games scheduled for seven innings. The Mets are 6-2 in seven-inning games at Citi Field, including sweeps of the Phillies and Rockies.
Brandon Nimmo continues to have an impact since returning from the injured list. The leadoff man had two hits on Monday against Milwaukee and is 7-for-18 (.389) with three RBI and four runs scored in four games back. Alonso delivered the game-winning hit on Monday and leads the team with 45 RBI while Dominic Smith drove in his 36th run of 2021.
Last time out, deGrom allowed three runs in the first inning at Atlanta but bounced back to retire the last 18 batters he faced. He ranks third in the league in strikeouts and has a record-best 0.90 ERA before the All-Star break.
He has faced seven Brewers in his career and allowed one home run to Willy Adames. Yelich is 9-for-15 (.600) against deGrom with three RBI, while Jackie Bradley Jr. is 1-for-5. Jace Peterson and Manny Pina both have two hits against the Mets ace.
Betting Analysis
In game one, the Mets are -170 on the money line and -1.5 run line at +155. The Brewers are +150 on the money line and +1.5 run like at -180. The total is 4.5 runs, with the under at +100 and the over at -130.
The Mets have won eight of deGrom’s last nine starts, with his most recent outing being the exception. The over has only cashed in two of his last six starts, and he could very easily go a full seven innings in this one. Burnes will be up to the task as well, with the Brewers winning four of his last five starts. However, the over has hit in four straight Burnes outings.
