The PGA held the Zozo Championship this weekend at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. It was a no-cut event with many of the top names in golf.
With the Masters coming up shortly, it’s a great time for some of these guys to start playing well.
Patrick Cantlay was able to move past Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas on Sunday to capture the win. As the winner, he took home a little over $1.4 million.
He was four shots back entering the final round but shot a 65, which was barely good enough for the win. The winning score was -23, with Rahm and Thomas each just one shot behind at -22.
Cantlay passed up two of the favorites to get the win. His odds were at 28/1, which was a nice payday for anyone who predicted his win. Rahm was at 10/1, while Thomas was at 12/1.
Other Notable Finishes
Bubba Watson was able to get another top 10 finish, which was his second in a row. He finished fifth in tee-to-green this week. Watson will be one to watch in the Masters, having already winning at Augusta once in his career.
Tony Finau entered this tournament after recovering from COVID-19. He had to withdraw from previous tournaments after testing positive.
However, he was in great form. Finau finished at -17, good enough to tie for 11th place.
Dustin Johnson had to sit out this weekend because of a positive COVID-19 test. He should be ready to go for the Masters.
Rory McIlory was one of the favorites this week, but the first round is what held him back. He shot a 73 on Thursday, then settled in after that. From Friday on, he never shot over a 67.
McIlroy finished at -15, which put him in a tie for 17th place.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were back on the course this weekend. No matter if they’re contending or not, plenty of people tune in to see how they are doing. The answer for this weekend – not good.
Woods was actually the reigning champion of the Zozo Championship after winning this tournament in early 2020. But he was far from the lead this weekend.
Woods shot a -1, finishing tied for 72nd out of just 77 golfers. An opening round of 76 set the tone for the week, but he did bounce back with a 66 on Friday.
If there was anyone who played worse than Woods, it was Mickelson. His +3 finish put him at second to last. This would’ve been a popular Sunday group to watch, even if they were out of the tournament.
Upcoming Masters
The Masters tournament will be held in November, after being postponed from the spring due to COVID-19. Golf fans are about to have a packed schedule, with more than the usual amount of majors in the next calendar year.
Some guys, like Cantlay, will being in great momentum to go after the green jacket. However, plenty of others aren’t playing exactly as they would like to be.
