Joe Burrow has more than justified his December award of the Heisman Trophy. On Sunday the star LSU Tigers quarterback led his team to College football’s most coveted title.
And what’ more, he did it in style. Yes, he again underlining the great talent and class that has made him one of college football’s biggest-ever standouts.
LSU Tigers thumped the Clemson Tiger 42-25 to win College Football’s National Championship final for 4TH time. Their previous national titles were won in 1958, 2003 and 2007.
The 23-year-old Burrow’s stamp on Sunday’s game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was huge. He overcame his team’s slow start and then lit the fuse to a dominant performance by with five great touchdown passes. He also rushed for another TD as LSU completed a perfect season.
In all, Burrow completed 31 of 49 passes to total 463 yards. His five TD passes took his total for the season to 60 (from 5600 yards) and gave him yet another college record.
For the Ohio born son of famed NFL player and long-time coach Jim Burrow, this victory was his 4th in a Bowl game. He has also won 2017 Cotton Bowl with Ohio and the Fiesta and Peach Bowls with LSU in 2019
Burrow had slow start at Ohio
After redshirting his first year at Ohio State in 2015, Burrow spent the next two as a backup QB to J. T. Barrett.
During these years he played in 10 games, completing 29 of 39 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns.
Then, realizing that Dwayne Haskins would be named as the next starting quarterback at Ohio State, he transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU) on May 20, 2018.
He had graduated from Ohio State in three years with a degree in consumer and family financial services, and was thus immediately eligible as a graduate transfer.
Earlier in the season, the struggling NFL teams were reported to be “tanking for Tua”.
However Alabama quarterback Tuo Tagovailoa’s subsequent hip injury and Burrow’s end of season heroics have changed all that.
From No 3, Burrow is now the odds-on favourite to be named the No 1 Draft Pick.
