DJOKOVIC IS THE FAVORITE FOR THE RICHEST-EVER US OPEN

Punters are going to have to spend a lot to win a lot at the 2019 US Open tennis championship.

The low odds being offered on both the men’s and women’s favorites will make sure of that.

At the same time, the players are going to have to spend a lot of energy to win a lot.

The record prizes to be paid out in New York next month will make sure of that. They are the biggest tennis incentive we’ve ever seen.

Both the men’s and women’s singles winners will be able to take home a whopping $3.85 million. That’s nearly a million more than Djokovic won at Wimbledon.

It’s also a million more than Shane Lowry pocketed at the British Open golf championship last week.

Before the first-round tee-off, you could have got 50/1 (+5000) outright odds on Lowry winning. A stake of $100 will, therefore, have won you $5 000.

The Big guns dominate the Grand Slams

This never, or hardly ever, happens in tennis. This is because its big guns dominate, winning much more regularly than big-name golfers do.

Here are some cases in point. The men’s singles in 2019’s first Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, was won by Novac Djokovic for the 7th time.

He defeated Rafael Nadal who, in turn, went on to win 2019’s second Grand Slam, the French Open – for the 12th time.

Djokovic won again in the third Grand Slam event at Wimbledon a month or so later.  This time the man he defeated after a brutal five-setter was legendary Roger Federer.

The Swiss 40-something is the owner of a record 20 Grand Slams, his last being the 2018 Australian Open.

And guess what – Federer had to beat Nadal in the semis to make the final.

It’s no wonder, then, that the US Open outright odds were so tight today (Wednesday, July 24).

Djokovic at +125, Nadal at +500 and Federer at +650

At +125 (5/4) the No 1 seed Djokovic was the unanimous US Open favorite of New Jersey’s 15 online sportsbooks.

They also agreed that No 3 seed Nadal should be the second favorite and second seed Federer their third favorite. However, in the case of these two, their odds were not the same.

New Jersey sportsbook market leader FanDuel had Nadal at +500 (5/1) and Federer at +650 (13/2). PointsBet, meantime, had them at +400 (4/1) and +550 (11/2) and 888sport at +450 (9/2) and +550 (11/2) respectively.

What all of this meant is that for say $400, the best you could win on Djokovic is $500. There’ll be more won for a stake of $400 on Nadal ($2 000) or Federer ($2 600). However, if you want to win big at the US Open, you’ll need to spend big.

Tight odds also applied for the women’s singles where Serena Williams was the bookies favorite at +450 (9/2).  Simona Halep, her recent conqueror at Wimbledon, was the second favorite at +750 (15/2).

The US Open will be played at Billy Jean King National Tennis Center,   NYC, from August 26 to September 8.
