Both New York baseball teams are on top of their divisions and have been for most of the 2022 season. This week they go head-to-head for a two-game series as the Yankees (66-31) head across town to face the Mets (59-37) in the Subway Series. Tuesday’s series opener will air nationally on TBS, starting at 7:10 p.m. from Citi Field in Queens.
The Yankees will start LHP Jeff Montgomery (3-2, 3.24) against Mets RHP Taijuan Walker (7-2, 2.55) on Tuesday. These teams will meet at Yankee Stadium for two games in August. Last year the Mets went 4-2 in the series with a 2-1 record at home, but the Yankees lead all-time 76-58.
Judge Keeps Going
The Yankees are 2-3 since the All-Star break, and they have scored at least five runs in five of their last seven games. They are 29-19 on the road this season and 45-23 against RHP. The Yankees are 5-3 against National League opponents.
The Yankees clinched the series at Baltimore with a 6-0 Sunday win. Aaron Judge homered again, his third of the series, and drove in two runs in the win. Jose Trevino was 4-for-4 with a double, while Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres both had two hits.
Judge leads the Yankees with 37 home runs and 81 RBI while also batting .294. Giancarlo Stanton has 24 home runs and 61 RBI, while Anthony Rizzo has 22 homers and 67 RBI. Since joining the Yankees, Matt Carpenter is batting .323 with 14 home runs and 35 RBI in 35 games.
Montgomery has three straight no-decisions and is 1-1 over his last seven starts. He’s gone at least five innings in each of those starts and has surpassed six innings in five of them. He’s allowed 13 home runs on the season while striking out 88 batters and walking 20 in 108 ⅓ innings.
Montgomery lost to the Mets twice last season, once in both stadiums. He allowed ten runs on 13 hits in 7⅔ innings in those outings. Eduardo Escobar and Lindor (5-for-6) both have home runs off Montgomery, but Pete Alonso and Mark Canha are both 0-for-5.
Alonso Helps Mets Avoid Sweep
The Mets snapped a season-long three-game win streak on Sunday night with an 8-5 win over San Diego. Prior to that win, they had scored ten runs in their previous five games. The Mets are 29-17 at home this season, 20-15 against LHP, and 5-8 against American League teams.
The Mets offense sputtered over the first 23 innings of the Padres series before breaking out with eight runs in three innings to avoid the sweep. Alonso had the big blow with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, and he finished 2-for-3 with four RBI. Starling Marte, Canha, and Lindor also had two hits in the win.
Alonso leads the Mets with 25 home runs and 82 RBI. Lindor has 16 home runs and 66 RBI, while Marte is batting .296. Jeff McNeil is batting .293 but is just 2 for his last 30.
Walker is 4-0 in his last seven starts with a 1.80 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 45 innings. He took a no-decision against the Cubs in his last start before the All-Star break, allowing one run on four hits over six innings. He’s gone at least six innings in eight straight starts and has allowed just one home run since May 5.
Walker was 1-0 in two starts against the Yankees last year, and he beat Montgomery head to head on July 3. Overall he allowed seven runs on eight hits against the Yankees while surrendering four home runs in 2021. Judge is 2-for-7 with two homers against Walker, Stanton is 4-for-10 with a home run, and Rizzo is 0-for-10.
Betting Analysis
- New York Yankees -1.5 (+155) Moneyline -105
- New York Mets +1.5 (-180) Moneyline -115
- Total Runs 8 Over -115. Under -105
Both teams are great in the series openers, with the Mets posting a 23-7 record and the Yankees at 24-8. The Mets score a run per game lower against left-handed pitching, and they hit 20 points lower than against right-handers.
The under is 11-4 in Walker’s starts and 11-8 in Montgomery’s; look for runs to be at a premium.
Betting pick: Under 8.0 runs (-105)
